Originaire du Kansas, il grandit parmi les pionniers de l\u2019ouest am\u00e9ricain, au contact de la nature sauvage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1848, il commence ses \u00e9tudes de m\u00e9decine dans le Missouri mais l\u2019enseignement m\u00e9dical le laisse sceptique quant aux r\u00e9elles possibilit\u00e9s de soigner efficacement son prochain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A partir de 1851, il commence \u00e0 mener cette activit\u00e9 de \u00ab&nbsp;m\u00e9decin&nbsp;\u00bb itin\u00e9rant au contact de la nature. Il diss\u00e8que des centaines de cadavres et acqui\u00e8re ainsi une parfaite connaissance de l\u2019anatomie humaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entre 1861 et 1865, lors de la guerre de s\u00e9cession, il exerce la m\u00e9decine et la chirurgie, compl\u00e9tant ainsi ses connaissances anatomique du corps vivant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1865, une \u00e9pid\u00e9mie de m\u00e9ningite cause la mort de quatre membres de sa famille, dont trois de ces enfants. Still est d\u00e9chir\u00e9 par l\u2019impuissance de la m\u00e9decine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 22 juin 1874, \u00e2g\u00e9 de 46 ans, il rompt d\u00e9finitivement avec la m\u00e9decine orthodoxe et expose ses th\u00e9ories sur l\u2019ost\u00e9opathie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jusqu\u2019en 1878, il gu\u00e9rit avec ses mains toutes sortes de maladies, m\u00eames certaines qualifi\u00e9es d\u2019incurables, ce qui est de plus en plus mal per\u00e7u par certains de ses confr\u00e8res.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es 1880, il devient ost\u00e9opathe itin\u00e9rant et acquiert une renomm\u00e9e importante aupr\u00e8s de la population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il d\u00e9couvre au fur et \u00e0 mesure les ressources de son art th\u00e9rapeutique et d\u00e9cide de former ses propres enfants, prouvant ainsi que \u00e0 l\u2019ost\u00e9opathie n\u2019est pas un don mais une pratique que l\u2019on peut transmettre. Tr\u00e8s vite, sa r\u00e9putation d\u00e9passe les fronti\u00e8res, puisque de nombreux \u00e9trangers viennent suivre ses cours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1892, il fonde l\u2019\u00e9cole am\u00e9ricaine d\u2019ost\u00e9opathie The American School of Osteopathy \u00e0 Kirksville. C\u2019est le premier \u00e9tablissement de ce type dans le monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le 12 d\u00e9cembre 1917, Still meurt \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 89 ans. C\u2019est \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque qu\u2019un de ses \u00e9l\u00e8ves J.M Littlejohn, originaire de Grande Bretagne, retourne \u00e0 Londres fonder le British School of Osteopathy. cette \u00e9cole sera \u00e0 l\u2019origine du mouvement de l\u2019ost\u00e9opathie en Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En France, ce n\u2019est qu\u2019avec Paul Geny, fondateur de l\u2019Ecole Fran\u00e7aise d\u2019Ost\u00e9opathie en 1950, qu\u2019elle conna\u00eet sa premi\u00e8re expansion.Suite \u00e0 diverses pressions, P. Geny est contraint de s\u2019expatrier en Grande Bretagne. il y cr\u00e9e avec John Wernham (\u00e9l\u00e8ve de Littlejohn) et Tom Dummer l\u2019Ecole Europ\u00e9enne d\u2019Ost\u00e9opathie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entre 1950 et 1960, diff\u00e9rentes organisations se structurent. Elles font venir des professeurs de Grande Bretagne et des Etats-Unis. L\u2019enseignement de l\u2019ost\u00e9opathie s\u2019organise \u00e0 nouveau en France pour ne plus s\u2019interrompre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr\u00e8s plusieurs projets de loi qui n\u2019aboutissent pas, la profession est l\u00e9galement consacr\u00e9e par la loi du 4 mars 2002 relative \u00e0 l\u2019am\u00e9lioration du syst\u00e8me de sant\u00e9 et au droit des malades.\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La naissance de l\u2019ost\u00e9opathie remonte \u00e0 la fin du 19\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.
